Gonna Make You Happy Tonight by Tripod

Gonna Make You Happy Tonight by Tripod

2004

There are classic love songs couples play at their weddings: soaring ballads that promise a long, loving life together; nostalgic first date reminisces; or beautiful classical melodic interludes, full of violins and passion.

But what if the groom was completely honest? Yes, he's in love and their first night as a couple is going to be magic – but he just needs to get past this high level on a video game first.

Cue Aussie musical comedy group Tripod. Here the trio croon 'Gonna Make You Happy Tonight', from their 2004 album Middleborough Rd. It's mocking and sultry, all self-satisfied grins and flirtatious winks, even as the trio hilariously lampoon the reality of domestic bliss after the romantic wedding haze. Tripod's original songs and harmonies tied together with comic banter is reminiscent of New Zealand musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, who similarly sang about 'Business Time' in their self-titled show.

Founded by Scod (Scott Edgar), Yon (Simon Hall), and Gatesy (Steven Gates) in 1996, they started out as buskers in Melbourne malls, performing an over-the-top prop act (now lost to history), before emerging as a musical act from the thriving Melbourne live music pub scene of the mid-'90s. They've performed internationally at the Montreal Just For Laughs festival, the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York and Los Angeles, and have made multiple appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
