This amateur film captures the second annual picnic of the Greek community of Canberra and surrounding districts. It took place at Good Hope, near Yass, on 26 December 1949. The camera pans slowly over the attendees, many raising cups filled from a wooden keg likely containing home-brewed beer, with cars and coaches visible in the background. After the meal, the community gathers by the lake in a circle surrounding a lone violinist. This home movie is a valuable record of friends and family celebrating Greek culture, music and dance in a lively outdoor gathering that reflects the social and cultural life of postwar migrant communities in Canberra. Emmanuel Gerakiteys, who shot most of the footage, owned and ran the Canberra Cafe in Queanbeyan and then the Blue Moon Cafe in the Sydney Building, in Canberra’s city centre.
