Before Kath & Kim, there was Big Girl’s Blouse, a riotous sketch show with Aussie comedians Jane Turner, Gina Riley and Magda Szubanski at the helm.

It features an assembly of outlandish characters, like a Big Girl’s Blouse magazine editor who plays hard and fast with the truth when reporting on celebrities’ lives – a fake pregnancy for Kylie is her 'Watergate'. There’s Patty Stacker, who delivers a less-than-conventional PSA on family planning. And most significantly, we’re introduced to Australia’s favourite suburban divas: Kath, Kim and Sharon, who would go on to star in the beloved Aussie comedy Kath & Kim.

This clip shows how the hard work is done to nail the word play in tabloid headlines at Big Girl’s Blouse magazine, their primary focus heartthrob du jour, Gary Sweet.

Premiering on 13 October 1994, Big Girl’s Blouse was the trio’s third sketch comedy show following Fast Forward and Something Stupid. It was a women-centric series that used heightened satire to skewer ideas about women – their lives, their bodies and their interests.

The show aired on the Seven Network in nine episodes.
