Australian Rules Football video game

1989

  • NFSA ID1708793
  • Year1989

This is the cover art for the 1989 Commodore 64 game Australian Rules Football, developed by UK company Clockwize Software Developments. While it’s notable as the first AFL video game, its European origins make it a novelty. It was released in German-, French-, Italian-, and Spanish-speaking territories, highlighting the international appeal of Australian sport. The picture recreates a moment from the opening of the 1986 VFL Grand Final between Hawthorn and Carlton.

Melbourne’s Beam Studio released Aussie Rules Footy, the first Australian AFL video game, in 1991. To no one’s surprise, the Melbourne game had a better grasp of the rules than its European forerunner.
