It may look like a retro arcade cabinet, but this black-and-lime structure is actually a coin-operated adult film viewing booth. A local Canberra contractor built it on consignment for an adult shop in Fyshwick in the 1970s. The exterior is constructed from cheap particleboard and plastic components. Inside, a Super 8 projector fed moving images through a series of mirror plates to a small private viewing window. Pushing $1 in coins through the slot bought three minutes of viewing time before the thermal timing mechanism cut off the film. The booth's technology was ingenious, clunky and unmistakably of its time.
