This 1927 newsreel shows many small boats and crowds in Sydney Harbour awaiting the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of York for the official opening of Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra.
This black-and-white Australasian Gazette newsreel shows the HMS Renown as it cruises into Sydney Harbour toward Farm Cove, where the official welcome is to commence. People on boats and along the Harbour foreshore wait with excitement for the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of York.
As this newsreel is silent, intertitles are used to describe what is visible on screen and to give a chronological sequence to the story. The intertitle in this clip describes the Renown as it travels through Sydney Harbour: ‘Amidst thousands of small craft, the Renown slowly and majestically makes her way past Pinchgut to her moorings’.
