Public asked to nominate their favourite for Sounds of Australia by Sunday 30 June.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is once again asking the public to help decide which iconic recordings should join the prestigious Sounds of Australia registry in 2019.
The Sounds of Australia are the ultimate songs, radio programs, jingles, etc. which left an indelible impact on Australian culture and history, and everybody is invited to have their say in this year’s selection.
From AC/DC to 'Waltzing Matilda', Sounds of Australia already includes 135 recordings; songs, inspiring speeches, sounds of nature, radio programs, Indigenous languages, and more. The list is as varied as Australian creativity; you can see the full list here.
Recordings from 2009 are eligible for the first time, including the year’s top singles by Guy Sebastian (Like It Like That), Kate Miller-Heike (The Last Day on Earth), Vanessa Amorosi (This Is Who I Am), Evermore (Hey Boys and Girls) and Jessica Mauboy (Burn) – source: ARIA’s Top 50 Australian Singles.
Nominations for 2019 close at midnight on Sunday 30 June. To make a nomination, go to the NFSA website (https://www.nfsa.gov.au/nominate-sound), and fill out the form. You can nominate as many sounds as you want, as long as they're Australian and more than 10 years old. Any recordings from 1896 up to 2009 can be nominated.
Once nominations close the NFSA will create a shortlist based on the public’s suggestions, and a panel of industry experts will vote for the top 10. This year’s Sounds of Australia will be announced in November 2019.
