American Epic: Sunday blues and barbecue at the NFSA
Next Sunday 11 December, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), supported by the United States Embassy, Canberra, is throwing a musical celebration not to miss!
The day-long event kicks off at 12pm and offers Canberrans a chance to experience the acclaimed documentary American Epic (2016). The day also includes LIVE wax recordings by our sound specialists; discussions around music in Australia and the US; drinks and barbecue in our heritage courtyard; filmmaker Q&A and an American-themed Vinyl Lounge.
The three-part documentary turns the clock back to the 1920s when record companies toured the US with a recording machine, capturing the music of the people and sparking a cultural revolution.
Directed by Bernard MacMahon, the series also stars contemporary artists such as Alabama Shakes, Jack White and Elton John recording straight to wax from reassembled equipment from the 1920s.
Discussing the project, Elton John said: ‘American Epic is more than a music documentary, this is history. It’s about music that’s original, influential, funky, blues, soulful, you name it; it’s had such an incredible impact on so many people. It’s truly an important cultural document.’
NFSA Senior Sound Curator Rod Butler said: ‘It will be a fantastic opportunity for Canberrans to experience the music and technology from an era that influenced both American and Australian culture.’
