The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is always researching the identity, provenance and copyright status of items in the national collection.
We respect the intellectual property rights and moral and cultural rights in the works under our care and custodianship.
We administer these works according to the Copyright Act 1968 (the Act).
We also take care to publish content with due respect to the integrity of the original work.
We make works available on our website and social media platforms as a result of either:
- having received permission from the copyright owner
- the work being in the public domain
- the use being available under an exception in the Act.

You can help us by sending new information you have about copyright in collection material by:
- emailing rights@nfsa.gov.au
- writing to PO Box 397, Pyrmont NSW 2009, Australia.
Takedown requests
You can object to the use of any of the works on the NFSA website or social media platforms on the basis that you consider the work’s publication is:
- offensive
- breaches copyright
- breaches moral or cultural rights.
Please contact the NFSA either by:
- emailing rights@nfsa.gov.au
- writing to the Manager, Licensing and Rights, National Film and Sound Archive, PO Box 397, Pyrmont NSW 2009, Australia.
What to include
In your correspondence, please include:
- details of the allegedly infringing or offensive materials and their website URL
- the basis on which you are making a claim, such as that you are:
- the creator of the work
- the copyright owner
- authorised to act for or on behalf of the copyright owner
- a member of a particular Indigenous or cultural group
- a user of the website
- your full contact details including postal address.
The NFSA will in its absolute discretion consider requests for the removal of content on the website. The NFSA does not guarantee that such requests will be accepted.
