Armistead Maupin reveals the real-life story behind one of the most enduring queer tales of our time. Maupin traces his humble beginnings as a small-town boy in the big gay city, where he started the newspaper column, 'Tales of the City' that later became the books and TV series loved the world over. He paints a vivid picture of queer life in San Francisco in the ‘70s and ‘80s, discussing everything from his conservative upbringing to gay bathhouses and supermarket cruising, the birth of the AIDS crisis, affairs with Hollywood celebrities including Rock Hudson, and more. Maupin's many friends – including Sir Ian McKellen, Neil Gaiman and Barbary Lane favourites Olympia Dukakis (‘Mrs Madrigal') and Laura Linney, (‘Mary Ann Singleton') – reflect not only on the immense impact of Maupin's work, but also on the warmth and generosity of the author himself. This candid, hilarious and moving documentary makes it abundantly clear that everyone loves Maupin – and you will too.
