Sunday Matinee: Silkwood – 35mm

22 May
Location informationArc Cinema
Event cost$12 / $10

Based on a true story. Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) works at a nuclear facility, along with her boyfriend Drew (Kurt Russell) and her lesbian friend Dolly (Cher).

When the plutonium plant falls behind on a major contract, Karen becomes concerned that management is cutting corners and putting the safety of workers at risk.

As she continues investigating, the increasingly outspoken Karen begins to suspect that workers are being exposed to high levels of radiation. She gathers evidence to bring to the media, while facing increasing opposition from everyone around her.

‘Wonderful performances steal the show in this film based on the real life of Karen Silkwood’ – The Austin Chronicle

‘Fuelled by Meryl Streep's performance in the title role … and tempered by Mike Nichols' understated direction, Silkwood is a brilliant movie’ – The Boston Globe

Presented on a 35mm film print from the NFSA collection.
