In 1930s Italy, Pasqualino (Giancarlo Giannini), a low-level Sicilian thug, kills a man who disgraced his sister. Pasqualino pleads insanity and manages to escape imprisonment by joining the military.

When he goes AWOL, he is imprisoned in a concentration camp. There, Pasqualino vows to do anything to survive – even if that means seducing a female German camp commandant (Shirley Stoler) or ratting out his own pals.

With Seven Beauties, an art-house sensation on its release, Wertmüller became the first woman ever nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards.

‘The movie's absorbing and mysterious … [i]ts virtuoso style demonstrating once again Miss Wertmüller's mastery of filmmaking’ – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
