NFSA film technicians worked tirelessly to restore this forgotten gem of Australian outback life of the early 1980s. Roger Whittaker’s 1982 documentary depicts the opal miners and underground homes of Coober Pedy, South Australia. The film also reveals how Coober Pedy has been changed by the recent arrival of television by satellite.

We hear from NFSA technician Ben Swadling about the work that goes into restoring and digitising film, with a side-by-side comparison of the 16mm original and the digital restoration plus a chance to enjoy the film itself.
