Set in the 1920s Republic of China, teenager Songlian (Gong Li) is forced to become the third concubine of the wealthy Master Chen (Jingwu Ma), after the devastating loss of her father leaves their family bankrupt.

Initially treated like royalty, she soon discovers that she must battle her fellow concubines for her master’s affections.

The situation inevitably leads to deception, jealous rages and the revelation of dark secrets.

Zhang Yimou’s bold direction, and the film’s luxurious cinematography and mise-en-scène have made the film a landmark of Chinese filmmaking.

Don’t miss the chance to see this beautiful 35mm film print on the big screen!
