National Science Week: Honeyland + Q&A
Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science among the public and the fascination of younger people with the world we live in.
In partnership with National Science Week ACT, the NFSA presents the beautiful story of Hatidze Muratova and her fight to save the bees and restore the natural balance.
Nestled in an isolated mountain region deep within the Balkans, Hatidze is the last in a long line of Macedonian wild beekeepers. Her peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the arrival of an itinerant family that senses opportunity in harvesting and selling the honey that Hatidze has nourished over many decades.
In the family’s hunt for profit, a breach in the natural order provokes a conflict with Hatidze that exposes the fundamental tension between nature and humanity, harmony and discord, exploitation and sustainability. Even as the family provides a much-needed respite from Hatidze’s isolation and loneliness, they threaten her very means of survival.
Join us after the screening for a Q&A with Cormack Farrell (Head Beekeeper, Parliament of Australia), Minister Rebecca Vassarotti (ACT Greens, Minister for the Environment, Heritage, Homelessness and Housing Services and Sustainable Building and Construction) and Julie Armstrong (ACT for Bees).
