Muriel's Wedding – 35mm

Socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately, thanks to her oppressive politician father (Bill Hunter), Muriel has never even been on a date.
Ostracised by her more socially adept but shallow friends, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda Epinstalk (Rachel Griffiths). Muriel and Rhonda soon move from small-town Porpoise Spit to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins redesigning her life to match her fantasy.
From the moment Rachel Griffiths arrives as Rhonda in a cloud of cigarette smoke and hairspray, she embodies the spirit of uncompromising and powerful female friendship. In her first film role, Griffiths portrays the character with such irrepressible honesty and humour that the real love story in the film is the bond between Muriel and Rhonda.
‘A gleeful, gaudy tribute to one ungainly misfit and her determination’ – The New York Times
