In Gillian Armstrong’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic, the March sisters confront growing pains, financial hardships, family tragedies and romantic rivalries in mid-19th-century Massachusetts.

Winona Ryder leads an all-star cast as Jo, who struggles for independence and sometimes clashes with her beloved mother (Susan Sarandon) and her sisters Meg, Amy and Beth.

She also contends with their cranky Aunt March, their impulsive neighbour Laurie (Christian Bale) and kindly linguistics professor Friedrich Bhaer (Gabriel Byrne).

‘An outstanding version of Louisa May Alcott's perennial, one that surpasses even the best previous rendition, George Cukor's 1933 outing starring Katharine Hepburn’ – Variety

‘The film is, in short, a joy to behold. But beyond the eye candy, there is real substance in the screenwriting of Robin Swicord. It's her naturalistic approach to a story she clearly loves that brings this beautiful film to life’ – Sojourner
