Ladies in Black – SOLD OUT
Please note: this event is now SOLD OUT.
Based on the popular novel by Madeleine St John, Beresford’s most recent film is set in the summer of 1959, during an increase in European migration and ahead of the rise of women’s liberation. A shy schoolgirl (Angourie Rice) takes a summer job at the prestigious Sydney department store Goode’s, where she meets the 'ladies in black' who will change her life forever.
With special guests, Bruce Beresford and Angourie Rice.
'From our vantage point 60 years on, Ladies in Black offers a vision – idealised, but perhaps not wholly false – of a moment when it was possible to welcome newcomers to the country and the unfamiliar ideas they brought with them. In this sense, it's also a film about the present. But yet another mark of Beresford's sophistication is that he doesn't need to spell this out.' – The Age
