Kindred is a journey into the emotional landscape of family, love and loss of two close friends, both Aboriginal, who were adopted by white families and have reconnected with their bloodline families.

When Wodi Wodi woman Gillian Moody and Wonnarua man Adrian Russell Wills met making their first short film together, little did they know that 25 years later they would be best friends. They turned to each other in navigating the emotional rollercoaster of being adopted into white families, and when connecting back with their bloodlines.

Kindred explores the importance of discovering your place in the world and realising that home and love truly can be found in the people and places your heart connects to. This intimate film is a continuation of the ongoing conversations between Wills and Moody, documenting their emotional searches for belonging and how their abiding friendship has offered solace in turbulent times.

With a shared aim to platform marginalised Indigenous voices, this director–producer duo first teamed up on the short films Angel (2000) and Daniel’s 21st (2010) as well as on the feature documentary Black Divaz (2018). Now turning the camera on themselves in their first collaboration as co-directors, Kindred is likewise a tribute to Indigenous strength, courage and sovereignty.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with directors Gillian Moody and Adrian Russell Wills and moderated by Prof. Brenda L Croft from ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

This title is held in the NFSA collection.
