Adam Garnet Jones' feature film Fire Song is the story of Shane, a gay Anishinaabe teenager in Northern Ontario, who is struggling to support his family in the aftermath of his sister's suicide. If he fails, he will be forced to choose between his family's home and his own future.
With sensitivity and intelligence, Fire Song confronts some of the most pressing questions facing First Nations communities. What is it that makes a community? And is a person's actual physical presence in that community a necessary part of it? Would Shane really be turning his back on those he cares for by leaving, or does the pressure on him to stay prohibit opportunity?
Fire Song is presented by the High Commission of Canada as part of the Canada-Australia Indigenous Health Roundtable.
The film will be followed at 8.30pm by a Q&A with lead actor Andrew Martin.
