Double feature: The Getting of Wisdom + Breaker Morant
Two classic films by Australian director Bruce Beresford.
The Getting of Wisdom - 4.00pm; 1977, PG, 101 mins
This coming-of-age drama follows an intelligent and artistic country girl who enters an exclusive girls' school. Set in the 1890s, the film follows her struggle for acceptance, romance, friendship and achievement. Followed by a Q&A with costume designer Anna Senior.
'Rightly regarded as one of the finest films ever made about Australian adolescents … And the story is so well told, with such attention to detail and an implicit understanding of the rhythms required for interesting drama, it has aged not a jot over three-and-a-half decades.' – The Guardian
Breaker Morant - 6.30pm; 1980, PG, 107 mins
Drawn from the stage play by Kenneth Ross and based on the true story of three Australian Lighthorsemen. At the height of the Boer War three members of the Bushveldt Carbineers face a court-martial in a politically motivated trial. Starring Edward Woodward and Jack Thompson.
'[Beresford’s] film, richly shot and so stirringly acted, remains one the most telling and moving parables of war’s grand folly that cinema has ever given us: an intelligent and moving depiction of the futility of war with a superb script and mesmerising performances from all.' – Empire Magazine
