(A Cry in the Dark), Dir: Fred Schepisi, M, Australia, 1988, 121mins, DCP,

PLEASE NOTE: THIS SCREENING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

When baby Azaria Chamberlain disappeared from her family’s tent at an Uluru campground in 1980, the case soon made international headlines.

Based on John Bryson’s 1985 book Evil Angels, the film follows parents Lindy and Michael Chamberlain (Meryl Streep and Sam Neill) as they struggle against public opinion to defend their innocence.

Streep was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of the divisive Lindy, who was convicted of her daughter’s murder and later pardoned following the discovery of new evidence. Evil Angels (AKA A Cry in the Dark) was released just months after her exoneration.

‘…remarkably well-judged; a shattering drama that will always manage to pack a punch’ – The Guardian

Evil Angels is held in the NFSA collection.
