Aussie Indies: Slam
Ricky Nasser (Adam Bakri) is a young Australian whose peaceful suburban life turns into hell when his sister Ameena (Danielle Horvat), a fearless hijab-wearing political activist whose electrifying slam poetry has earned her an online following, disappears without a trace.
In a climate of distrust and xenophobia, she is soon suspected of having joined the ranks of ISIS in Syria. In an ‘alternative facts’ world, Ricky no longer knows what to trust: his own sense of right or wrong, or the non-stop barrage of the 24-hour media cycle.
This gripping thriller also offers intelligent observations about race, gender, religion, xenophobia and the roles played by police and media in the name of national security and the war on terror.
‘For all its social and political subtext, Slam always stays firmly on track as a propulsive and engrossing thriller’ - Variety
