Aussie Indies: Nitram + Q&A
Our regular spotlight on recent highlights from the Australian independent filmmaking scene.
Nitram (Caleb Landry Jones) lives with his mother (Judy Davis) and father (Anthony LaPaglia) in suburban Australia in the mid-1990s. He lives a life of isolation and frustration at never being able to fit in, a belligerent young man who is chillingly out of control, his already unstable personality made worse by the relentless bullying he suffered at school.
Looking after this aggressive, violent child has reduced his parents to ghosts of their former selves. Nitram unexpectedly finds a close friend in a reclusive heiress, Helen (Essie Davis), who takes a shine to him. But when that friendship reaches a tragic end, Nitram’s loneliness and anger grow, and he begins a slow descent into a nightmare that culminates in the most nihilistic and heinous of acts.
