On the variety show In Melbourne Tonight, host and performer, Mike Preston speaks with Ed Devereaux about his role in Skippy and the international popularity of the show. Devereaux remarks that the character he portrays, Head Ranger Matt Hammond, is not so different to his own real life personality. They then list the extraordinary number of countries where the show has has been sold. Preston does, however, mistakenly includes Sweden. Skippy was never broadcast in Sweden because psychologists thought it would be detrimental for children to believe an animal could 'talk' and do all the things Skippy did in the show.
This is a delightful clip from a variety show of the late 1960s. The set looks like a gentlemen's drawing room from another era and both Devereaux and Preston are immaculately attired, chatting comfortably in their swinging armchairs. The camerawork and live production is kept simple and effectively adds to the feeling like they are having a friendly conversation and we are merely evesdropping.
