The Redfern Story (PG)
Dir: Darlene Johnson, Australia, 57mins, colour, DVD
Prod: Darlene Johnson, Sue Milliken
In the late 1960s, the Sydney suburb of Redfern became home to over 20,000 Aboriginal people. It was soon overcrowded: poverty, illiteracy and alcohol provoked anti-social behaviour and conflict with the police. But in 1971, a small group of untrained, but passionate and talented, activists came together and formed The National Black Theatre. It soon became a focal point for the fight for equal rights and opportunities for Australia’s first people.
