Manning Clark House has been at the centre of things too. “We regard it as the spiritual home of our enterprise,” says Vincent Plush, the NFSA’s head of Cultural Programmes and main instigator of the project. “We think Manning would have approved of the gathering of ideas around the big table, and the discussions and arguments that will inevitably result.”
MCH hosted the planning meetings of the institutions, neutral ground for the cautious dance that occurs when major cultural institutions meet to map out unfamiliar territory. MCH also hosted one of the major events of the Journey – “The Big Voss Book Club” – in the gardens on the morning of Sunday 17th May. David Malouf, librettist of the operatic version of Voss, was part of a lively panel which discussed the novel and tried to place it in the pantheon of our cultural consciousness.
