performances and public art, performed on iPods, mobile phones, laptops and instruments, conventional and bizarre.
The NFSA presentation will include a demonstration of the PitchWeb, a multi-user musical instrument that can be programmed into your phone to make you part of the performance. If you would like to participate you should bring your phone and its model details so that we can help you install PitchWeb on the night.
New York-based Farrell and Duckworth are in Australia to work on iOrpheus, their public opera based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. iOrpheus is an international art project which is expected to draw thousands of participants and online visitors from around the world when it is unveiled in Brisbane in on 31 August 2007. Duckworth and Farrell have been building networked creative communities since 1997 when they launched their Cathedral Project, an on-going interactive work of music and art designed specifically for the web.
The Cathedral Project has three components: the website that features a variety of interactive musical, artistic and text-based experiences; the PitchWeb virtual instrument, which allows listeners to play together online;and the Cathedral Band, a group of improvising musicians who give periodic live performances from venues around the world, during which global PitchWeb players frequently sit in.
William Duckworth is the last surviving member of John Cage¹s circle of composers. He is in Australia as a Senior Fulbright Fellow.
Already plans are in train to see Duckworth and Farrell return to Australia in 2009, to mount a large, state-wide public event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the State of Queensland, and to 'sow'sound-gardens in various sites around the country, including, hopefully, at the NFSA headquarters in Acton.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear more about Duckworth and Farrell¹s pioneering multimedia work.
