Sounds Alive!

January - June 2008

Sounds Alive

An innovative, curated series of sound events from the Recorded Sound and Indigenous branches of the NFSA in our new state-of-the-art venue, Arc.

Sound is an integral component of the work of the NFSA. We collect sound – all sounds: the chirrup of birds and the clatter of machines, the soundtracks of films and recorded music of all genres. The songs and sounds of Indigenous and migrant traditions, of our European heritage, of film, radio, television, the web and other new ways by which our society communicates with itself.

Arc is not a concert hall. It is primarily a cinema. And this is not a concert series. Without wishing to replicate what is already presented in Canberra, this unique series of curated events explores the nature of sound itself, pushing out boundaries and definitions and admitting new possibilities and potentials.

Many of the works presented here spill into the visual world – the pictorial dimensions of East Timor and West Papua; the cartoon imagery of Felix the Cat, and the invocations of Australian yester-years in The Sentimental Bloke and selections from our famed Corrick Collection.

Whilst casting an occasional wistful glance back over the shoulder, we look also at the future of sound in our society and how this might affect what we collect and preserve. In essence, we give you a glimpse of what sustains and fascinates us in our work.

Welcome, as you join us on our continuing exploration of … sound!
