The Australian Jazz Archive &
National Register of Australian Jazz Interviews
The Australian Jazz Archive is a part of the National Audiovisual Collection held by the NFSA.
It was established in 1997 as part of an initiative by members of the Australian jazz community, who formed a partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive to build a national collection of jazz recordings and materials.
Over many years, the Archive has built a substantial collection of Australian jazz material, including sound recordings, film and videos and oral histories. However, there is still unique Australian jazz material to be located for the Australian Jazz Archive, with the assistance of the AJANC.
Included in the archive is the National Register of Australian Jazz interviews which was compiled by John Sharpe. This is a combined list of recorded interviews with jazz musicians held in Australia. They include oral histories, radio interviews, and interviews conducted for research. Most of the interviewees were Australian jazz musicians; others were visiting artists or people closely associated with jazz in Australia. For information on searching the National Register, see Register of Jazz Interviews Search Tips.
To search for any items with jazz content in the NFSA's National Audiovisual Collection, select Class: 'Music Jazz' on the Advanced Search page and then refine your search by nominating a musical group or selecting a time period that you are interested in. Alternately you can enter 'Australian Jazz Archive Collection' in the Collection Name field which will bring up the items acquired since the Australian Jazz Archive was established in 1997.
