[MELBOURNE, VIC : ABORIGINAL RECONCILIATION CONFERENCE, AND 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1967 REFERENDUM] Anchor person: Vicky Gibbons A television news item from 27th May 1997. It reports on activity in Melbourne (Vic) and Canberra (ACT) relating to the 30th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum. At the Australian Reconciliation Convention (26-28 May 1997) in Melbourne, the people who had worked for the Referendum 30 years ago are hailed as heroes. In Canberra an early morning vigil was held outside Parliament House to campaign against racism and for 'Justice for Indigenous Peoples'. Brief television footage is shown of the Referendum campaign and of Aboriginal children in a mission school. An extract from an address by the Governor General, Sir William Deane, follows.
