New Media Project

What is the New Media Project?

As part of the National Film and Sound Archive's existing Collection Development Policy, the New Media Project aims to archive a representative sample of electronic and networked material relating to Australian screen and sound.

Why collect New Media?

New media includes the Internet and covers a vast array of online material, including web pages. More and more people are using the Internet in ways only limited by imagination. It is continually growing and currently there are over 500 million pages online. In addition, some researchers predict that by 2005, 195 million users will be online!

Internet sites can and often do change. While it is not possible to archive all instances of change, a representative example of the website's evolution can be documented. The Archive works to collect this material as it relates to screen and sound productions, in collaboration with the National Library of Australia and others.

If you would like to know more about archiving New Media, visit the National Library of Australia and Partners' PANDORA Project website: http://pandora.nla.gov.au/index.html

How can you lodge new media material with the National Film and Sound Archive?

The National Film and Sound Archive collects examples of websites, netcasting in radio and television, audio files, video files, streaming audio and video, and other emergent media technologies (for example CD-ROMs, computer games, animations, etc).
