Australian Folk Music Project

What is the Australian Folk Music Project?

As part of the National Film and Sound Archive's existing Collection Development Policy, the Australian Folk Music Project is seeking to enhance the National Collection of Australian folk music sound recordings, i.e. music and spoken word, made by Australian performers, composers, instrumentalists and groups that have been broadcast or published in Australia or overseas.

Why collect Australian Folk Music?

The aim of the Australian Folk Music Project is to increase the representation of recorded folk music in the National Collection, particularly focussing on independent recordings. We aim to reflect the diversity of folk music, past and present, and support the place of 'Folk' in Australia's recording history. Direct access to information about the Australian Music Collection is available on the online collection database.

How can you lodge material with the National Film and Sound Archive?

We collect recordings and music videos/films from all eras and genres on various formats.

If you would like your contemporary folk music to become part of the National Collection we are requesting that you donate two CD copies of each recording. This allows for one copy to be kept for preservation and the other copy to be used for reference.

Original recording materials are accepted under the terms of donation or deposit.

We also collect associated documentation such as posters, publicity photos (negatives and prints), artists' biographies and memorabilia.

The National Film and Sound Archive observes and supports copyright legislation and artists' intellectual property rights.

Your contribution can help ensure the preservation of Australia's folk music heritage for future generations.

If you would like to donate or deposit your folk music with the Archive or you have any questions about the Australian Folk Music Project, please contact:
