Stencil

A process that began in 1905 by Pathe Freres to colour black and white films. Dyes were applied to each individual frame of film with a stencil either manually or mechanically. It was very labour intensive but accurate and reliable. The practice ceased in the late 1920s with the development of colour film stocks.
