My Bicycle Loves You is a collaboration between the NFSA and the physical theatre company Legs on the Wall (LOTW) that will blend film footage with live performance to reveal the world of the much-loved touring entertainers, the Corrick Family. This extraordinary footage from the early 1900s of trick, comedy, chase and travel films will dazzle modern audiences as much as it did when the films were made. The Australian-based Albert and Sarah Corrick and their eight musically talented children toured the world between 1901 and 1914, their shows alternating live variety acts with enthusiastically received, short dramas, comedies, trick films, travel and other actualities. Thanks to later generations of the Corrick family and now the NFSA, most all of the around 130 short films in the collection have survived in excellent condition, several being the only surviving copies in the world. The NFSA are restoring the Corrick Collection in ways that include replication of the remarkable colouring of many of its original prints.
For LOTW, whose work mixes dance, mime, acrobatics and dialogue, the story of the Corricks and the exhilarating, other-worldly films in their collection kick-started a wealth of ideas for My Bicycle Loves You. The LOTW team began by viewing the collection at NFSA’s Sydney Office and consulting with NFSA staff about the lives and work of the Corrick Family and the theatrical context of their day. The NFSA ultimately provided high-quality digital copies of selected Corrick films for use in the My Bicycle performances at the Sydney and Perth festivals. Through providing films, research and other resources for My Bicycle this program is raising public awareness of both the Corrick Collection and the NFSA.
