American Movie Treasures: Universal Noirs
To 4 April
Film noir was almost as much a ‘house’ specialty for Universal studios in the 1940s and ‘50s as horror films had been in the 1930s. We continue our centennial celebration of Hollywood’s oldest ‘major’ studio, with a look at how Universal’s noir specialists – directors like Robert Siodmak and Jules Dassin, and producers like Mark Hellinger and Joan Harrison – made their distinctive contribution to pushing the style and themes of film noir towards a greater social and psychological realism.
American Movie Treasures: Universal’s Movies is presented with the support of the Embassy of the United States, with special thanks to Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich. Presented with the assistance of Universal Studios. Thanks to Trevlyn Gilmour (US Public Affairs Office), Peter Langs (Universal Studios).
